Crossing Rivers, Defying Odds: Meta’s Fight for an Education

This year, one of the houses we visited belonged to Meta, a prospective student of Amisewaka — DLCC (DLCC). Although she lives close to our campus, her educational journey is far from easy. Meta’s house is in a remote area, far from the nearest settlement and beyond roads accessible by most vehicles. To reach her, we had to follow a narrow footpath and cross a river that separates her community from the outside world.

During the dry season, the river can still be crossed on foot. However, during heavy rain when the water level rises, crossing becomes dangerous, sometimes impossible, and as a result, Meta is unable to attend school. Despite these obstacles, she has never given up. Meta comes from a family facing serious financial hardship. Her father lacks stable work, and her mother works hard to support the family. Amid these challenges, Meta believes that education is her path to a better future. “I want to continue my education as far as possible and find a better job,” Meta wrote in her application.

For Meta, education represents the hope of helping her parents, improving her family’s economic situation, and proving that difficult circumstances don’t have to define her future. She dreams of developing professional skills and language abilities that will prepare her for meaningful employment. She believes that with proper education and training, she can secure a stable career and lift her family out of hardship. Every day, Meta’s determination is put to the test. The long walk, the river that can block access to school, and the financial struggles at home are constant realities. Yet behind every obstacle stands a resilient young woman committed to her goals.

Meta’s story reminds us that many young people in remote communities possess remarkable potential. Their dreams are just as big as anyone else’s; they face more barriers to achieving them. Through the scholarship and vocational training opportunities offered by DLCC, those barriers can start to break down.

For students like Meta, access to education is a lifeline for a different future. Your support helps make that future possible. Sometimes, a single scholarship can do more than change one student’s life; it can transform the future of an entire family.

Every journey is easier when we walk together. By offering a helping hand, you become the bridge that helps students like Meta cross over their obstacles and into a brighter tomorrow: https://www.desalescommunitycenter.org/donate/
